Nineteen sixty-four was the year where the Swingin’ ‘60s kicked into high gear. The Beatles came to town and inspired girls to faint and guys to pick up a guitar. It is no coincidence that the Ford Mustang entered the world to reflect the values of a new, optimistic America.
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Mustang’s debut, the Automobile Driving Museum will be hosting a celebration on Saturday, February 1st from 10 am to 2 pm. On the premises there will be a display of classic 1964 ½ Mustangs, one of which is the 1964 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.
When the Mustang debuted on April 17th, everyone from homemakers to airplane pilots wanted one. With sporty proportions and an option list as long as Wilt Chamberlain’s arm, the Mustang could be all things to all people: a little runabout with a straight-six to go from Point A to Point B, or a solid-lifter performance car that could have been at home in Europe, and everything in between. Even though introduced as early-1965 models, the first examples are referred to as 1964-1/2 models since certain equipment has made them distinct to the 1965s that were introduced in September. That was the moment two other noteworthy Mustangs were introduced: the 2+2 fastback body style and the GT package. Soon after, Carroll Shelby would introduce his GT-350, and by the end of the 1966 model year, well over a million Mustangs had been sold.
With support from the Los Angeles Shelby American Automobile Club, Beach Cities Mustang Club, Mustang Owners Club of California, and South Bay Mustang Owners club, this golden anniversary will host a cruise with food to be sponsored by Dickey’s BBQ Pit in Redondo Beach, CA.
